I’ve heard palm oil is bad for you. Why do you use it?
Palm oil is very high in saturated fats. While it was once believed that saturated fats caused bad cholesterol, health professionals today believe the opposite is true and most of us should incorporate more healthy saturated fats into our diet.
I’ve heard the palm oil industry is destroying our rainforests. What about your palm oil supplier?
This is true for a large portion of the palm oil industry. Our take on it is: Rather than boycott the whole industry because some are doing wrong, let’s support those who are doing it right. Our palm oil supplier is keenly aware of the wrongs done in the industry and has taken numerous steps toward showing the industry the right way. They are Rainforest Alliance Certified, among many other certifications that show their dedication to sustainability and stewardship. We feel good about supporting them.
Is Inulin good for you? Why do you use it?
Agave inulin is considered a “super fiber.” It promotes digestive health by serving as a prebiotic that aids the good bacteria in our gut. It is often sold and taken as a health supplement for healthy gut support.
We use inulin, not only for its health benefits, but also to help give the carob a better feeling and texture in the mouth.
Why do you use cinnamon in the carob?
A couple reasons:
- Carob, even unsweetened, has a fairly high natural sugar content. Cinnamon can balance and lower blood sugar levels, reduce heart disease risk factors and has a plethora of other impressive health benefits.
- When we developed the recipe and did taste tests, the addition of cinnamon was voted on as a clear win. Most people appreciate the added depth of flavor it brings.
If by chance you don’t do well with cinnamon; Uncommon does private label a non-cinnamon carob bar, called the “Aussie SharkBar”
